What are Readiness Monitors? OBD II is a system that has been installed in most and later cars and light trucks, intended to inform the driver of problems in the components that control the engine and transmission. The primary reason OBD II was invented is to reduce smog emissions caused by malfunctions, but it is also valuable as an alert to the driver that something is wrong…something that can affect gas mileage and drivability, or actually cause further damage to the vehicle. While you are driving your vehicle, its computer is constantly monitoring and running tests on the various sensors, actuators and electrical parts that make the car run properly. Even if there are no problems with your car, the results of tests that have been run are stored in the computer as having been completed. There are several reasons why the monitors may be incomplete.

If you might have passed in the old test of sniffer and a visual if the tester was clueless the car never came with a turbo. The new test they are making all the smog test shops buy new equipment that detects modifications to the ECU. Unless TPC can stealth their programming the So Cal turbo is reserved for mechanics with lifts or people willing to spend thousands removing, reinstalling, and shipping the ECU back and forth to TPC every 2 years I’m not sure this is the case re: In my earlier post I provided links to a host of mods turbos, superchargers that all include re-writing parts of the code in the ECU in order to work.

I had my vacuum advance hooked up to the ported vacuum port after reading this article I hooked it up to full manifold vacuum adjusted the idle rpm. The car has so much more power now. As many of you are aware, timing and vacuum advance is one of my favorite subjects, as I was involved in the development of some of those systems in my GM days and I understand it. Many people don’t, as there has been very little written about it anywhere that makes sense, and as a result, a lot of folks are under the misunderstanding that vacuum advance somehow compromises performance.

Nothing could be further from the truth. I finally sat down the other day and wrote up a primer on the subject, with the objective of helping more folks to understand vacuum advance and how it works together with initial timing and centrifugal advance to optimize all-around operation and performance. I have this as a Word document if anyone wants it sent to them – I’ve cut-and-pasted it here; it’s long, but hopefully it’s also informative.

In some jurisdictions, maintaining them is a must and the rules tighter California and Arizona, for example , than in others, where the rules are much more lax. The general exception to maintaining their presence or functionality legally is if the vehicle is used strictly off-road or not. Many Scouts fall into this category. However, as you will see, it is to your advantage to keep many of these devices intact and functional regardless of where you drive your vehicle.

The only application where complete removal of all devices makes any sense is on a race vehicle. Also, the case can be easily made that most people defeat these things simply because they do not understand them or because they often lack the expertise to maintain them.

Some shops won’t care about your headers, some will want to see an EO number, some will get the EO number and run it to ensure that not only is the part legal, but it’s legal for your car.
